No c2c or Greater Anglia trains on Christmas Day. Last year the final Christmas Eve trains left London at 21:50 and 22:04. What is confirmed for 2026 so far.

Neither of Southend’s railway lines will run on Christmas Day 2026. National Rail has already confirmed that for both c2c, into Fenchurch Street, and Greater Anglia, into Liverpool Street. Christmas Eve trains will finish earlier than usual on many routes.

The rest of the fortnight is not published yet. Last year’s plans are the best guide to what to expect: the last Christmas Eve trains home to Southend left London at 21:50 and 22:04, and Liverpool Street was shut from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day.

The quick answer

  • No trains at all on Friday 25 December 2026, on either the c2c or the Greater Anglia line (National Rail).
  • Christmas Eve finishes early. In 2025 the last direct trains were the 21:50 from Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria and the 22:04 from Fenchurch Street to Southend Central. The 2026 times are due in late November or early December.
  • Every council car park is free on Christmas Day, and seafront Zone 1A is charged at the cheaper Zone 1B price from November to January (Southend-on-Sea City Council).

What is confirmed for 2026, day by day

National Rail’s festive guide covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 (National Rail). Its separate c2c and Greater Anglia pages confirm Christmas Day and nothing else so far. Every other date says “Information will be published when available” (c2c page, Greater Anglia page).

The Monday bank holiday is the one to watch out for. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December (GOV.UK).

Christmas Eve: last year’s last trains home

National Rail publishes a list of the last direct trains out of London on Christmas Eve. For 2025 it listed these two for Southend (National Rail, archived 15 December 2025):

Greater Anglia said at the time that its trains would stop running by 22:00 on Christmas Eve, with fewer trains from 19:00 (Greater Anglia). c2c said only that its services would finish earlier than usual (c2c).

Those are 2025 times, not 2026 ones. National Rail says the 2026 list will be published in late November or early December (National Rail).

What it means for you: if you are in London on the evening of Christmas Eve, plan on the last train home leaving before 22:00 until this year’s list is out. Last year there was no late-evening train home on either line.

What happened last year between Christmas and New Year

The 2025 plans show where the disruption usually lands. Liverpool Street is the big one.

Greater Anglia (Southend Victoria, Prittlewell, Southend Airport, Rochford). Liverpool Street station was closed from 25 December to 1 January inclusive while Network Rail replaced roof panels and worked in the Bishopsgate tunnel (Greater Anglia). From 27 December to 1 January, trains between London and Southend Victoria started and ended at Stratford instead. Tickets were accepted on the Central line and the Elizabeth line between Stratford and Liverpool Street (National Rail, archived 28 November 2025). There were no Greater Anglia trains on Boxing Day apart from the Stansted Express.

c2c (Leigh-on-Sea, Chalkwell, Westcliff, Southend Central, Southend East, Thorpe Bay, Shoeburyness). Fenchurch Street stayed open, and c2c ran most of its normal service:

What it means for you: in 2025, c2c was the better line for London between Christmas and New Year because Fenchurch Street stayed open. Nobody has said yet whether Liverpool Street will close again in 2026.

New Year’s Eve

In 2025 neither Southend operator added late trains after midnight. National Rail’s New Year’s Eve list said no additional c2c services had been announced and no additional Greater Anglia overnight trains had been announced (National Rail, archived 19 December 2025).

For 2026, National Rail says some London routes will run special services into the early hours of 1 January 2027. The list is due in early December (National Rail). Staying in town instead? See New Year’s Eve in Southend.

Still to be confirmed, and when

  • c2c and Greater Anglia day-by-day plans. National Rail says operator detail will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”. Last year Greater Anglia published its plan on 29 October and c2c on 12 November.
  • Christmas Eve last trains. Due late November or early December.
  • New Year’s Eve late trains. Due early December.
  • Major engineering work, including any Liverpool Street closure. National Rail says full details will be published “when available”. On 24 September 2026 the only named Christmas work in its guide was at Birmingham New Street, nothing on either Southend line.

Buses over Christmas

Neither bus company has published a 2026 festive timetable yet. Arriva’s Christmas and New Year page returned a “page not found” error when we checked on 24 September 2026 (Arriva), and we could not find an Arriva notice for Southend from last year.

First’s notice also said Ensignbus would run between Southend, Basildon and Lakeside (X1) or Upminster (X2) on Boxing Day 2025.

Driving and parking instead

The council’s car park tariff sets three festive rules (Southend-on-Sea City Council):

  • Free parking at every council car park on Christmas Day.
  • From November to January, Zone 1A is charged at Zone 1B prices. Three hours on the seafront costs £6.60 instead of £8.70.
  • After 6pm, three hours in Zone 1A or 1B is £5.00. Charging runs until 9pm, which helps with a Christmas lights visit or a trip to the pantomime.

Frequently asked questions

Do trains run from Southend on Christmas Day? No. National Rail confirms that no c2c or Greater Anglia trains will run on Friday 25 December 2026.

Are there trains on Boxing Day? Not yet confirmed for 2026. National Rail says most operators run nothing on 26 December. In 2025 there was no c2c service and no Greater Anglia service apart from the Stansted Express.
